Nandi governor suspends 16 county officials after thefts

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has bowed to public pressure and suspended 16 senior county officials to facilitate investigations into the theft of county resources worth millions of shillings.

Among them are three county executives Hillary Koech (Transport and Infrastructure), Valentine Chumo (Education) and Stanley Baliach (Land).

Others are chief officers Jonah Biwott (Transport and Infrastructure), Daniel Sang (Education), David Kemei (Director Roads), Edwin Mosbei (Project Manager – ECDE).

Also suspended are drivers, clerical officers and mechanics.

TYRES STOLEN

The suspensions follow the recent theft of a consignment of 99 tyres valued at Sh3.4 million and which were meant for the county vehicles and the alleged theft of ECDE construction materials.

“My administration will fully support the investigative and prosecuting authorities to pursue these cases to their logical conclusion. Any county officer or staff found to have participated either directly or indirectly or abetted the loss of government resources and property will face the full force of the law,” warned Governor Sang.

Following the suspensions, the governor appointed a seven-member committee to serve in acting capacity as investigations get underway.
