Dorm at Narok’s Eor-Ekule Boys School burns in morning fire

A fierce fire has burned a dormitory at Eor-Ekule Boys High School in Narok County.

Property worth millions of shillings was lost in the Wednesday morning fire incident whose cause remains unknown.

Narok East Sub-County Commissioner Arthur Bunde who confirmed the incident said the fire broke out while the school’s 600 students were in classes for morning preps.

“No one was inside the 80-beds capacity Loita dormitory when the fire broke out. We are investigating the incident by interrogating teachers, staff and watchmen to establish the source of the fire. But we cannot rule out arson as a possible cause of the fire,” said Mr Bunde adding that nobody has been arrested in connection with the incident.

“There should, however, be no cause for alarm because all students were in their classrooms at the time the fire broke out,” added Mr Bunde.

Students’ property including mattresses, boxes and stationery were reduced to ashes.

The officer who was accompanied by area police boss Joseph Kisompe ruled out possible closure of the school saying alternative accommodation for the students would be sought. This includes using one of the classrooms as a dormitory.

“Students lost property of unknown value but are forced to remain in school because the exams were to start today (Wednesday),” he said.

Parents led by Joseph Nchoshoi who neighbours the school thanked the police, the Narok County fire fighters and residents for swiftly tackling the fire which could have spread to other areas.

“Had it not been for the quick response of the fire engines, the school’s neighbours, teachers and the police who immediately swung into action, the fire could possibly have burnt other buildings causing more damage,’ said Mr Nchoshoi.
