What you need to know:

  • The fire started when the pupils were in a church service.
  • No pupil was injured but all the property in the dormitory was destroyed.

A dormitory housing 100 pupils at Riomego Primary School in Nyamira County was razed down on Saturday under unclear circumstances.

Head teacher Samuel Nyambasora said the school guard raised the alarm at around 11am when the pupils were in a Seventh Day Church service.

ALARM

“The watchman saw smoke billowing from the dormitory and upon realising the building was on fire, he raised alarm,” he said.

Efforts to put out the fire were unsuccessful, and by the time the newly acquired Nyamira County Government fire engine arrived, all the pupils' property had gone up in flames.

However, no pupil was injured during the incident.

“We are currently trying to establish the cause of the fire,” Mr Nyambasora said told the Nation.

Investigations are ongoing, he added.
