Nurses in Nyamira resumed work Friday morning following a meeting with the county administration.

The return-to-work deal was reached at in a meeting on Thursday evening.

The negotiations were between officials from the county and nurses' union. They deliberated salary pay crisis gripping the devolved unit.

The nurses were further assured that they will not be victimised following their participation in the two-month industrial action.

But doctors, who were also on strike, stood their ground and vowed to go back to work after they receive their salaries.

The strike had paralysed health services across hospitals and dispensaries in Nyamira County with patients flocking to neighbouring counties for medical attention.

Hospitals in Kisii, Kericho and Homa Bay counties reported high numbers of patients from Nyamira.

The nurses were among hundreds of workers in the region who withdrew services to protest a two-month delay of their salaries.

On Thursday, Mr Onchana said the county will from now to continuously improve the working environment for the public service through a structured framework as per the constitution.

He said they will also follow up with the Controller of Budget on the delayed salaries with view to have it paid out to them by the close of this month.

Mr Onchana also told the workers that the remittances to the relevant institutions will henceforth be done date 15 of every month.

“The County will also establish a responsive communication system to improve relations and feedback mechanism between the workers and the county,” said the statement also signed Acting Chief Officer Health Services Dr Jack Magara and his deputy, Dr Dominic Barare.

The nurses were represented by Mr Oruta, Andrew Gwaro, Benard Magare and Julius Nnyanagau.
