Police in Nyandarua are holding a man who has been masquerading as a mentally ill beggar in Ol Kalou town after he was found in possession of Sh33,900 during a crackdown on drug peddlers.

Police say the suspect initially believed to be a madman is a peddler of hard drugs belonging to a known drugs supplier in town.

He was found to be mentally fit after interrogation at Ol Kalou Police Station.

The money was found during a raid by police led by OCPD Wilson Kosgei at a pool hall also suspected to be a drug peddling base.

“I got information from members of the public that some peddlers operate from there. Upon arrival, I directed my officers to conduct a search on all the young men in the hall. We were shocked to recover that kind of money from a man who has probably not had a bath in weeks,” said Mr Kosgei.

Mr Kosgei said initial investigations revealed that the man is used to supply drugs by a known drug baron in Ol Kalou town who has gone into hiding.

“The money was well kept, decently folded and arranged according to denominations. He is stinking and we believe that stench is part of his weapon. In the cells, the man didn’t display any signs of mental illness and indeed confirmed the amount recorded in the occurrence book is the amount he had,” said the OCPD.
