Report: 29 dead in Nyandarua motorbike crashes in 3 months

At least 29 people have died as a result of road crashes involving motorcycles in Nyandarua County in the last three months, a police report has shown.
According to Nyandarua County Police Commander Gideon Ngumi, about 50 boda boda crashes have been reported in the county in the last three months.
The police boss has attributed the high number of crashes in the county to failure by the riders to follow traffic rules.
“We have had a total of 50 cases of motorbike accidents since January, 29 of them being fatal.
“Most of the accident occur as some of the riders fail to observe traffic rules,” said the county commander.
ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGNS
Dr Ngumi noted that plans for road safety campaigns are underway to help ensure the safety of pedestrian, passengers and motorcyclists.
“We shall soon role out a road safety campaign to sensitise motorcycle riders to be more vigilant while using the roads and tell them the importance of using helmets, reflector jackets and having all the requirements needed before using a motorcycle on the road,” noted Dr Ngumi.
At the same time, the police boss called on the police to maintain a human face while dealing with the riders.
According to statistics by the National Transport and Safety Authority, general road fatalities as at April 11, 2019 had increased by 24.57 percent, totalling 3,767 compared to the same time last year where a total of 3,024 fatalities were recorded.
