A Form Two student in Nyandarua County took her own life at home on Thursday night, after accusing her mother of confiscating her mobile phone.

The 16-year-old attended Gathara Secondary School in Kinangop Constituency.

Tulaga village elder Njuguna Kiiru said the girl's phone went missing that morning and that she suspected her mother took it.

“She spent the whole day without the phone and was very bitter about it. She complained to her cousins and friends that her mother had taken the phone,” he said.

SHOCK

The mother said her daughter's death was shocking.

“She was in good terms with everyone. She prepared supper and served us before heading to her room. She never mentioned the disappearance of her phone to me," she said, adding that the cousins informed her after they discovered the girl had died.

The woman said she woke up to the sound of the alarm on her daughter's phone and found it under the teenager's bed.

“She normally wakes me up early in the morning to do the milking. I got concerned when she took longer than usual to go to the kitchen, where she was to warm water for this,” she said.

ONLY CHILD

The mother found the girl's body hanging from the roof when she went to her room to check on her.

“I am in pain because she was my only child. I do not understand why she decided to commit suicide, leaving me childless."
