Fifteen passengers who were aboard the vehicle were critically injured during the 7pm Sunday incident.

OCPD Sylvester Githungo said the passengers were rushed to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital in Laikipia County.

“The pupil of Jacaranda Primary School in Ol Joro Orok Constituency, Nyandarua County died on the spot after being hit by the matatu. The passengers sustained serious injuries, but they were rushed to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital for treatment,” said Mr Githungo.

“The driver lost control of the motor vehicle after hitting the boy and then it landed in a drainage along the road. We are not sure about the number of passengers, our priority was to save the lives,” added the OCPD.

According to eye witnesses, the boy was crossing the road at Nyakarianga market in Nyandarua County, about 100 meters from Ol Joro Orok town when he was hit.

“The Matatu was driving at a very high speed when the boy suddenly emerged from the opposite direction. The driver swerved to avoid hitting the boy but it was too late. He lost control and landed in the drainage along the road,” said the eye witness.
