The dreaded Mungiki sect has resurfaced in parts of Nyeri County, security officials have said.

Speaking during Madaraka Day celebrations at Dedan Kimathi Stadium, County Commissioner Onesmus Musyoki said the illegal group’s activities have been in major towns.

The murderous group is known for extorting money and is believed to have resurfaced, operating in major matatu terminuses in Nyeri Town.

According to Mr Musyoki, the group has begun extorting illegal security fees from public service vehicles at three terminuses.

They are said to operate during the morning hours and in the evening.

This tactic is characteristic of the group and those who have failed to comply in the past have been killed in brutal ritualistic murders.

SECURITY ALERT

“A few of those young men have started their operations and we are very alert.

“They should know that there is no place for them in this county,” said Mr Musyoki.

Once again, he bashed the county government for issuing licences irregularly to bars and restaurants, saying it was hindering the war on alcoholism, which has crippled the area.

Mr Musyoki said joints issued with temporary licences would be shut down.

The security agencies have been facing an uphill task after most bar owners moved to court and presented licences issued by the county government.

The official vowed to crack down on criminal activities, including the resurgence of Mungiki and prevalent cases of armed robberies.

This comes after the deployment of a quick response team in the county.
