Security authorities in Nyanza have issued an alert after River Yala breached its banks near the Dominion Farms in Alego, Siaya.

Nyanza Regional police boss Leonard Katana on Tuesday night warned locals living near the river banks to move to higher  grounds.

Both sides of Alego Usonga and Yimbo in Bondo were under water on Tuesday.

"The river broke its banks but we are monitoring the situation. We urge those living along the river banks in Alego and Yimbo to move to safer grounds," Mr Katana told the Nation.

Siaya Deputy Governor James Okumbe said he was not aware of the situation but promised to address the matter on Wednesday morning.

Floods have in the past swept away crops in East and West Yimbo in Bondo and Ratuoro in Alego Usonga.
