Ex-minister Mwamunga to be buried on Saturday in Voi

Former Cabinet minister Eliud Mwamunga will be buried at his Sagalla home in Voi, Taita Taveta County on Saturday, the family has announced.

Speaking in Voi, the former politician’s children said his final journey will begin on Thursday from the Agha Khan Hospital mortuary to his Ndara home.

His daughter, Esther Sau Mwamunga, said a requiem mass will be held at the ACK cathedral on Friday.

“After the requiem mass we will then proceed to Sagalla for an overnight stay and (he will be) subsequently buried on Saturday at his Nebo farm,” she said.

According to his son, Sammy Mwamunga, the organising committee consists of the family, government representatives and the church.

He said both national and local leaders are expected to attend the funeral ceremony.

He added that they had already received confirmation of attendance from local leaders including MPs Jones Mlolwa (Voi) Naomi Shaban (Taveta) Kwale Senator Stewart Madzayo, former senator Dan Mwazo and former Permanent Secretary Emanuel Kisombe.

“We are yet to know whether any leader from the national government will attend,” he said.

He said members of the public are welcome to pay their final respects to the former Voi MP.

“When we get tributes from across Kenya saying that our father was not only a son of Taita Taveta but also a Kenyan leader, this consoles us,” he said.

Mr Mwamunga died last Saturday at Agha Khan Hospital in Mombasa while undergoing treatment.

He was 83.
