A 27-year-old man from Kiraro village in Maara, Tharaka-Nithi County has hanged self after his parents reportedly said he could not marry his girlfriend.

The body of Lewis Mwandiki was on Monday found by neighbours dangling from a tree near their home.

Maara OCPD Johnston Kabusia said the young man left a suicide note blaming his parents for denying him the chance to marry the girl he loved.

“The deceased left a suicide note explaining that he opted to terminate his life because his parents denied him the chance to marry his girlfriend,” said Mr Kabusia.

He said the body was taken to Chuka County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination and that police immediately launched investigation into the matter.

EMBRACE DIALOGUE

The OCPD urged parents from the region not to be too hard on their children but instead embrace dialogue.

The incident shocked villagers who described the man as a humble person who kept to himself.

“He was my friend but has never told me that he had such problems,” said Mr John Mutembei, a villager.

Ms Jane Kathure, another resident, asked parents to allow their children to make choices on their marriage partners to avoid such incidents.

“Parents should advise their children on love matters instead of dictating to them,” said Ms Kathure.
