A boda boda rider died while and two other people were critically injured in an accident involving two motorbikes at Ndagani market near Chuka University in Tharaka-Nithi County on Friday night.
Mount Kenya Region Red Cross Manager Gitonga Mugambi said the injured were rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital.
Mr Mugambi said the motorbikes collided head on. Mr Mugambi, who warned boda boda operators against flouting traffic rules, said one of the
motorcycles had no lights.
“The rider who died had a faulty motorcycle,” said Mr Mugambi. The officer said it was unfortunate that the country was losing many youths in road accidents.
Deaths caused by boda bodas on Kenya roads have risen by nearly a third in the past year according to National Transport and Safety Authority.
The statistics released this month indicate that at least 684 people were killed in motorcycle-related accidents, a 27 per cent increase over last year’s.
