Tharaka-Nithi County procurement director Lawrence Mutembei has been released by a Chuka court on a Sh200,000 cash bail or bond of Sh500, 000.
Mr Mutembei was arrested by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives at his office in Kathwana on June 13, 2018 on allegations of receiving a bribe.
Before Chief Magistrate John Njoroge, the procurement boss who has been in police remand since his arrest denied the three counts of corruption-related charges brought against him.
In the first count, the court heard that the accused requested for Sh40, 000 on June from Mr Charles Mugendi, a supplier, to facilitate shortlisting of his company, Limsey Company Limited, to supply stationery to Tharaka-Nithi County government.
In the second count, the court was told that the accused requested for a financial incentive of Sh20, 000, and the third count that he received Sh20, 000.
When he was first taken to court on June 18, the state lawyer, Ms Jane Maari, successfully asked the court for more time to allow detectives conclude their investigation.
The case will be mentioned on August 6.
