Three die, two injured in road crashes in Tharaka-Nithi

Three people have died in two separate road crashes in Chuka/Igambang’ombe Sub-County, Tharaka-Nithi County.
In the first incident, a couple, Joseph Mwenda and his wife Nancy Karimi, perished in Kiangondu along Mt Kenya Forest road in the outskirts of Chuka town after Mr Mwenda lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree.
Mr Mwenda was working at Chuka University as a librarian while his wife worked with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) at Kiangondu station in Mount Kenya National Park.
In another incident, Frida Mukwanjeru died after the driver of a speeding Toyota Probox car she was in and which was ferrying miraa from Meru to Nairobi lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and landed in a ditch near Njuri High School.
SERIOUS INJURIES
Confirming the incidents, Chuka/Igambang’ombe OCPD Benson Makumbi said the other occupants of the Probox car, the driver and a passenger, sustained serious injuries and were taken to Chuka County Referral Hospital in critical condition.
“Bodies of the three have been taken to the mortuary at Chuka County Referral Hospital,” said Mr Makumbi.
Chuka University Vice Chancellor Erastus Njoka visited the scene where Mr Mwenda and his wife perished. He was accompanied by Tharaka University College Principal, Prof Peter Muriungi.
Prof Njoka termed the incident as a big blow to both the family and the university.
“Mr Mwenda was an employee in our university and the news (of his death) are very sad to us,” said Prof Njoka.
OCPD Makumbi said police were yet to establish the exact causes of the two crashes and advised drivers to be extra careful when driving along the roads in the region which have many corners and slopes.
He also called for observance of traffic signs especially those warning drivers against speeding on reaching public places like towns.
