A Kitale court on Tuesday directed two former members of Saboti Constituency Development Fund to pay Sh2.1 million each or be jailed for eight years after finding them guilty of theft.

Another former member was ordered to pay Sh2.4 million or serve nine years in prison.

The court found Ignatius Katasi Maina, Charles Maina Wafula and Thaddeus Wekesa Makokha guilty of forgery, fraudulent acquisition and misappropriation of public funds, crimes committed 11 years ago.

They were jointly charged with Mr Isaac Masengeli who is still at large, in a case filed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The three were accused of fraudulently acquiring public property and misappropriation of Sh700,000 meant for the construction of a borehole at Nabunga Secondary School in 2007.

According to court documents, the crime was masterminded by the then Secretary of Saboti CDF Committee, Masengeli.

The three men pleaded for leniency, saying they were the breadwinners of their families.
