Police arrest 28 foreigners in Kapenguria

Police in Kapenguria have arrested 28 foreigners who were travelling from Kakuma Refugee Camp to Nairobi without valid documents.

The officers said the foreigners might have either escaped from Kakuma or entered the country illegally.

The Somali and Sudanese nationals were found outside the refugee camp without authority from refugees department.  

West Pokot Sub-County Deputy Police Commandant Anthony Wanjuu said that they had arrested 23 Somali nationals, two Sudanese and 3 children at Tartar on the Lodwar-Kitale highway following a tip-off.    

TRAVEL PASSES

Mr Wanjuu said on Wednesday that the suspects, who are being held at Kapenguria Police Station, had neither immigration documents nor travel passes from Kakuma.

“Before leaving the camp they (refugees) are supposed to have a clearance certificates, which they did not have,” said Mr Wanjuu.

The officer, who said that the police had launched a crackdown on illegal immigrants in all major towns in West Pokot County, urged residents to inform the police should they see strangers.  

The 28 will be charged with residing outside designated areas without permission.
