Covid-19: Kenya cases rise to 2,767 after 167 test positive

Covid-19: 167 more test positive as 46 leave hospital

The number of Covid-19 cases in Kenya has increased to 2,767 after 167 tested positive from 2,833 samples in the last 24 hours.

Giving the Ministry of Health daily updates on coronavirus infections on Sunday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said that the new cases comprise 125 males and 42 females.

DISCHARGED 46

Mr Kagwe noted, however, that Kenya had discharged 46 patients. This raised the country's total number of recoveries to 752.

On a sad note, he said that one more patient had died, raising Kenya's Covid-19 death toll to 84.

Nairobi County has the highest number of infections at 54 followed by Mombasa (47), Busia (28), Kiambu (14) and Uasin Gishu (11) from Soy 5, turbo 3 and Kapsaret.

“It is so critical to ensure that counties begin to take responsibility. The test of a devolved system is going to be now,” said Mr Kagwe.

The national government will intervene directly in the case of Busia County because of the increased number of truck drivers turning positive. The CS noted that among the infected was an 11-month baby.

“The high numbers come from extremely targeted testing, if you look at Busia and other border counties, there is a huge number of truck drivers,” he said.

He said that the government’s position regarding the opening of bars and sale of alcohol remained the same.

“Opening of bars and sale of alcohol remain banned, those who the flout rules will have licences revoked,” Mr Kagwe said.

The CS said thanked those in Nyumba Kumi, especially those in rural areas who report new entrants from the virus epicentre into their regions.
