Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Hassan Noor Hassan Friday revealed Sh21,990,000 has already been paid to a total of 2,199 players and technical officials from 83 teams.

The cash is part of Sh54 million that has been approved by Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund to cushion sportsmen and women from Covid-19 effects.

Kenyan sportsmen and women are bound to lose close to Sh5 billion this year owing to the recess caused by Covid-19 pandemic. Hassan disclosed that Kenyan sportsmen and women have not been spared of the effects of the disease.

Hassan said the sportsmen and women are bound to lose in appearance fees, prize money, endorsements and other outside contracts with sportswear firms.

“The athletes will not race in well-heeled marathons and races which included the lucrative Diamond League Series, Worldly Athletics Continental Tour, the Olympic Games, World Rugby Sevens Series an several marathons, all which have been postponed or cancelled,” said Hassan.

Hassan was speaking at the Nyayo National Stadium when he briefed the media on progress made in the disbursement of Covid-19 stimulus package.

Hassan noted that players participating in local leagues continue to suffer loss of income from training and match allowances as a result of the suspended competitions.

“This is where they earn their livelihood to sustain their families,“ Hassan explained. “Likewise, the technical officials like coaches and trainers who earn from sports have also been adversely affected by the stoppage of sporting activities in the country, and globally.”

Hassan said that these groups require cushioning in order to enable them remain physiologically and psychologically for training to go through this difficult time.

At the same time, 300 athletes have so far received food packages besides the Sh10,000 token.

“In addition, approximately 250 athletes are in the process of being paid. These amounts have been paid directly to the athletes trough their mobile numbers and guardians after vetting by the ministry and respective federations,” said Hassan, who was flanked by Kenya Deaf Sports Federation president, Peter Kalai and Kenya National Paralympic Committee president, Agnes Aluoch.

Deaf sports and paralympians are among the beneficiaries.

Hassan said that even though each athlete will get Sh10,000 each for the next three months starting May 20 they will review the pay upwards depending on funds available as he called on strategic partners to support the process.

So far, Hassan said they have received a total of Sh20 million from their partners with sports betting firm Betika contributing Sh15 milliion and other well-wishers Sh5 million.
