THE CUTTING EDGE

What you need to know:

  • The business community has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

GRIM NEWS • “Every time they appear on TV, they convey depressing news,” says Kamichore Mutindira, on the Health ministry’s Covid-19 updates. “Why are they not telling us about the swabs developed by a Kenyatta University biochemistry student or certification of the ventilators made by KU? In Githunguri, an artisan is making ICU beds at half the price of imports.” His contact is [email protected].

MOURNING MWALIMU • The death of University of Nairobi sociology lecturer Ken Ouko of Covid-19, Misky Chebaliat says, is a hard blow. “For me, it sank in when I heard the devastating news that my former lecturer had succumbed to this monster. Dr Ouko was one of the lecturers who left a mark. I’m gutted. This is such a huge loss. Rest in peace, Mwalimu!” Her contact is [email protected].

HARSH ORDER • Nairobi Metropolitan Services’ directive to building owners to repaint them in 60 days has not gone down well with GMT Ottieno: “The business community has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Many have been closed down. With tenants having rent arrears, where are the owners going to get the money to repaint the buildings?” His contact is [email protected].

PLEA FOR TIME • The NMS, Kiran Shah appeals, should reconsider its directive on repainting city buildings. “It’s not fair to require the owners of buildings to repaint them every year. Today’s paints last a minimum of five years.” The landlords, he proposes, should be allowed to repaint their buildings every three years. “Also, the paints are quite expensive.” His contact is [email protected].

WAR OVER GREATS • “Carey Francis versus Geoffrey Griffins” is X.N. Iraki’s response to a proposal by Chris Kiriba to rename Pumwani High School after the Alliance High School great. Prof Iraki says he is “immortalised with a hall at Alliance” and “another education giant, Geoffrey Griffins, is buried just across the fence at Starehe Boys Centre. I’m an Alliance alumnus, but do I say!” His contact is [email protected]. Have a remarkable day, won’t you!
