New design

I woke up at 6am to grab a copy of the Saturday Nation. The new design deserves an award. It helps readers find their way. My eye movement across the pages is more natural, as if the design was carefully guiding me from the quality images to the titles, block paragraphs, articles, etc.

It’s awesome

Being a reader of the Nation for 40 years, I’m impressed by the new design. It’s well arranged, sharply printed with clear images. It covers nearly everything in social life, from politics to economics and much more. The cartoons are rib-cracking despite their strong messages.

Cramped design

The font size in the new-look Nation is smaller and cramped. Secondly, the headlines are not as eye-catching. Thirdly, the editorial has been downgraded to equal status with personal opinions. I find this odd. The editorial can’t be grouped together with the opinion pieces where readers express their views; it should stand out.

NTV grammar

I follow NTV news from abroad. Errors in the  YouTube video captions have increased. Example: “Online registration for church attendance to be implemented by some church” (July 19, 2020). These “small errors” dent your image.

Numerical illiteracy

The story “Just what did Moi own? Lots of questions, few answers” (Saturday Nation, Aug.1, 2020), says President Daniel arap Moi owned 99.99 per cent and a foreign firm 0.1 per cent of Hotel InterContinental. That’s 100.09 per cent cumulative ownership. Granted, most writers are numerically illiterate, but the editor shouldn’t be.
