The recurrent budget for the governor’s office will go up by Sh114 million in the new financial year, a 56 per cent increase.

Details on the increase are contained in the Budget and Appropriations Committee report, which was approved by the county assembly on Tuesday last week.

The governor’s budget is expected to jump from Sh205 million to Sh319 million due to an increase in expenditure on catering, daily subsistence allowance, personal allowances and maintenance.

Expenditure on catering increased by Sh2.2 million; from Sh4.3 million in the 2019/20 to Sh6.5 million. Personal allowances have gone up by Sh1.2 million, from Sh6.7 million to Sh7.9 million. The daily subsistence allowance increased from Sh2.3 million to Sh3.5 million.

Some of the reasons given for the increases include additional security officers who have been deployed to the governor’s residence in Lugari, and the introduction of service delivery meetings.

The report raised questions about the status of the governor’s residence, with plans in place to transform the residence into an office for the county chief. The assembly said the decision should be formalised.

The assembly was allocated Sh1.066 billion – Sh645.2 million for personnel emoluments and Sh 422 million for other operations.
