Police are investigating a child marriage incident in Lamu.
A muslim cleric is accused of marrying a 13-year-old girl in Dide Waride village.
The cleric is accused of working in cahoots with the girl’s parents.
Local administrators rescued the girl, who was allegedly married off early this week, but the girl is said to have gone back to the man’s house.
Dide Waride Chief Abdi Bocha said the girl is a Standard Eight pupil at a local school.
The girl was married off to the ustadh on July 13. We have done our best to rescue her but her parents are colluding with the man to ensure the marriage happens," Mr Bocha said.
The head teacher of the girl told the Nation that he has already submitted a report to Education officials for action.
Lamu Commissioner Irungu Macharia confirmed the incident and said the cleric and the girl’s parents will be arrested.
Mr Macharia urged parents to inculcate the culture of education in their children in order to fight biting poverty in Lamu.
Early pregnancies have spiked in the county in the last four month. At least 20 school girls are pregnant in Faza, Kizingitini and Tchundwa areas.
