Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River has been sealed off following a spike of Covid-19 cases at the facility, Machakos governor has announced.
Dr Alfred Mutua said three patients have died of Covid-19 at the facility in the past one week. The governor added that a health worker at Shalom has been infected with the virus.
“Last night, my government, after consultations with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council and the Director General of Health, sealed off Shalom hospital in Athi River following deaths of some patients due to Covid-19” Dr Mutua said in a statement.
No one is allowed to get in or out of the hospital.
The governor said plans are underway to test patients and workers at the hospital for Covid-19.
“I urge all Wananchi to be patient as we ensure all health facilities are safe so as to avoid hospital-based infections that were witnessed in places like New York and several Italian cities,” Dr Mutua said.
A total of 54 Covid-19 cases have been reported in Machakos since the outbreak of the virus in the country.
Machakos Health CEC Ancent Kituku said since the lab at Machakos Level Five Hospital became a testing centre for the virus, health workers have tested more than 1,500 people.
Out of these samples, 11 were confirmed positive. The CEC said another 43 people from Machakos were infected with the virus after they were tested in Nairobi.
