Irate boda boda riders on Wednesday evening set ablaze a truck in Eldoret after the driver hit and killed a pedestrian on the Eldoret-Nakuru highway.

The pedestrian was knocked down while crossing the busy highway near Moi University’s Annex campus.

The driver, while escaping the wrath of the riders, also hit and injured a rider at Sosian Bridge.

The riders cornered the driver near Rupa and set the truck on fire.

The driver narrowly escaped death and was rescued by other road users who took him to Eldoret Police Station.

Firefighters from Eldoret fire station arrived at the scene and managed to put out the fire. The truck was transporting hardware materials from Mombasa to Uganda.

The incident caused traffic snarl up along the busy road.

Police officers led by Turbo commander Eliud Maiyo used tear gas to disperse the furious boda boda riders who had threatened to burn the truck into ashes.

Mr Maiyo warned the riders against taking the law into their hands.

“The incident is regrettable. I appeal to riders not to take the law into their hands,” Mr Maiyo said.

Mr Maiyo said the body of the pedestrian was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary and the injured rider was taken to the same hospital for treatment.

The driver of the truck is in police custody.
