  • The Lamu-Ijara-Garissa Lapsset Corridor Access Road construction project was launched in April 2021 after the Kenyan government inked a Sh17.9 billion deal with China Communications Construction Company.
  • Shortly after the project began, al-Shabaab launched numerous attacks and killings, causing the contractor to suspend work from time to time.
  • The al-Shabaab attacks have left construction equipment worth over Sh200 million destroyed.
