April 1953: Suspected Mau Mau fighters are taken to Githunguri court and accused of leading an uprising against British colonial rule.

October 1952: British Government declares a state of emergency.

February 8, 1952: Queen Elizabeth II of England on arrival from Kenya. She was staying at Treetops hotel in Nyeri when she heard news of her father's death.

1956: Field Marshall” Dedan Kimathi is shot, wounded and captured.

1958: Jaramogi Oginga Odinga asks questions in the Legco about Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in prison.

April 14, 1959: Jomo Kenyatta is detained at Maralal.

May 14, 1960: James Gichuru is elected acting president of the newly formed Kanu party until Kenyatta's release.

December 12, 1963: Prince Philip of Great Britain hands over Nairobi town to Prime Minister Jomo Kenyatta .

June 1, 1963: Jomo Kenyatta is driven past the New Stanley Hotel on Lord Delamare Avenue (now Kenyatta Avenue) after he was sworn in as Prime Minister.

December 10, 1964: Jaramogi Oginga Odinga is named Kenya’s Vice-President in a cabinet reshuffle.

July 3, 1968: Kitili Maluki Mwendwa is sworn in as first African Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.

October 25, 1969: President Jomo Kenyatta travels to Kisumu to officially open the “Russian Hospital” (New Nyanza General Hospital), a pet project of his fierce rival, opposition leader Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

The two leaders exchange harsh words, a scuffle breaks out and presidential security personnel fire into the crowd, leaving more than 10 people dead.


Three days later, the Jaramogi's KPU party is banned and Kenya becomes a de facto one-party state.
