8pm About 50 heavily armed men storm into Mpeketoni Town in two vehicles, randomly shoot at civilians.

9pm Local police make distress call.

Several buildings including hotels, restaurants, banks and government offices burnt down.

More people shot dead, most of them in the head.

Cafes and bars that were reportedly packed with people watching the World Cup deserted.

1am Distress call responded to, more officers dispatched.


Fierce gun battles continue throughout the night into the early hours of Monday morning.

7am Benson Maisori, deputy commissioner for Lamu, tells AFP death toll at 26 but could rise.

8am Kenya Red Cross says eight more bodies found.

9am Government official confirms death toll risen to 48.
