Indefatigable world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge Friday kept the promise of maintaining his Covid-19 relief mission by distributing supplies to 100 families in his Nandi County backyard.

Kipchoge was in his Kapsisiywa Village cradle where the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation in conjunction with the Madhvi Family, and friends, also supplied re-usable sanitary pads to women.

Madhvi Dalal runs an organisation that goes by the name: Initiative on Menstrual Health, Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights and Reusable Sanitary Pads.

The mission played out at Kapsisiywa Secondary School, a venue that was used for a public viewing of the INEOS 1:59 Challenge last year when Kipchoge made history by becoming the first man to run a sub two-hour marathon on October 12 in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

“As I was running in Vienna during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, this place was full of people watching and I’m here today to donate food to vulnerable families. Today, we managed to give 100 families supplies,” said Kipchoge.

He noted that many families are suffering and appealed for further help.

“It has been a challenge for many families and we decided to come back here in Kapsisywa where we have donated assorted food and blankets to the elderly. “This is also one way of giving back to the community,” said the legend. Kipchoge launched the relief initiative in March following the suspension of all sporting events due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Many vulnerable runners have benefited and more stakeholders have been partnering with Kipchoge who is also the Olympic marathon champion.

He urged caution and strict adherence to public health advice on tackling Covid-19.

“Athletics may have been hit hard by the virus and many are affected but we need to hold on a little bit as we wait for the virus to be contained.

“I would like to urge the public in general to continue practicing the laid down rules by the ministry of health of social distance,” said Kipchoge.

Kipchoge is currently preparing for the London Marathon which was rescheduled to October 4.
