IIEC releases final referendum tally

The Interim Independent Electoral Commission has released the final referendum results on the proposed constitution.

The chairman of the IIEC Ahmed Isaack Hassan announced that Yes garnered 5,954, 767, representing 67.25 per cent of the vote while No got a total 2, 687, 193 (30.25pc).

"The new Constitution has been approved by more than 50 per cent of the vote and by more than 25 per cent in eight provinces," said Mr Hassan while releasing the results at the Bomas of Kenya Thursday. He said there was a 71pc voter turnout, which he termed impressive especially for a referendum.

The IIEC also released Yes and No tallies for Kenya's eight provinces.

Seven provinces returned the Yes vote at the referendum on the proposed constitution with the Rift Valley voting for the No camp.

The results are: Nyanza Yes (1,174, 033); No (101, 491), Coast Yes (425, 626); No (111,531), Nairobi Yes (678,621); No (208,195),

North Eastern Yes (110, 992); No (4, 570).

Others are: Eastern Yes (741, 089); No (572,109), Rift Valley Yes (668,175); No (1,326,079), Central Yes (1, 274, 907); No (235, 588)

Western Yes (681, 264); No (127, 230).
