Kareena Kapoor, one of the biggest names in Bollywood, premiered her film Veere Di Wedding in Nairobi on Friday.

Earning Sh1.92 billion worldwide, it emerged as one of the highest-grossing Hindi films featuring a female lead. Slater and Whittaker, who are the official distributors of Magic Moments Vodka, partnered with Pinky Ghelani for the screening of the film for a worthy cause.

According to UNHCR brand ambassador, Pink Ghelani, the company wanted to support the LuQuLuQu Movement which was launched in November 2017. The LuQuLuQu campaign is a collaborative effort with prominent African personalities and companies to promote the principles and values of sharing responsibility for one another, and sharing resources, in support of the displaced people in Africa.

The movie, a fun-filled comedy that focuses on the friendship of four young women, is in Hindu and has English subtitles. It is a high-spirited and upbeat coming-of-age story that revolves around the lives of four childhood friends: Kalindi (Kareena Kapoor), Avni (Sonam Kapoor), Meera (Shikha Talsania) & Sakshi (Swara Bhaskar).

LIFE CHANGED

When they reunite 10 years later, they don't realise how much life has changed from what they had expected it would be. The film is set against the backdrop of Delhi - where the girls are born and brought up, their trials and tribulations in the modern-day world regarding family acceptance, marriage and societal perceptions.

Apart from the storyline, the audience were eagerly waiting to see the fresh pairing of Sumeet and Kareena. This was the first time that the actor, known for his digital stint (online shows), shared the screen with Kareena, and fans couldn’t stop gushing over the natural chemistry that these two showcased on the big screen.

Kapoor is noted for playing a variety of characters in a range of film genres, from romantic comedies to crime dramas. Kapoor is the recipient of several awards, including six Filmfare Awards, and is one of Bollywood’s most popular and highest-paid actresses.

After making her acting debut in the 2000 war film Refugee, Kapoor established herself in Hindi cinema with roles in the historical drama “Aoka”, and the blockbuster melodrama “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”.

“The screening of Veere Di Wedding will go towards creating more awareness to the plight of refugees through LuQuLuQu movement,” said Ms Ghelani.

The term “LuQuLuQu” draws on the Africa philosophy of “Ubuntu”, “Ujamaa”, or “yi bi ma” the spirit of sharing resources and caring for one another. It is a borderless movement that aims to redefine a better way of giving and involve for the first time on a global level, individuals to recreate the narrative of the African refugee.
