Talking to...Kagwe Mungai

What you need to know:

  • I’m your favourites' favourite. Cooler than the other side of the pillow. I am us. And this is what Africa looks like as it rises.

  • Everything around me inspires me. My life, other peoples experiences and stories. Heartbreak, love, and making the world a happier place. I’m inspired by good music not any particular artiste but good natural music.

  • I believe in art. And I try to ooze it through my appearance.

Kagwe is possibly one of Kenya’s fastest growing artistes. He studied music at the University of Southampton and has been producing music since he was 12. As well as creating his own seemingly diverse sound, he has also worked directly and produced music for Blu3 (the Ugandan Coca Cola Pop stars).

A Producer, composer, songwriter, singer, rapper, saxophonist, keyboardist, drummer and now a style star I sat down with the possible new Kule (in regard to fashion of course) to find out a little more about him.

Describe Kagwe

I’m your favourites' favourite. Cooler than the other side of the pillow. I am us. And this is what Africa looks like as it rises.

Were you always interested in music?

Yes. Not the subject, but I came to realise that the theory in music is highly vital to mastering and honing the craft. It’s been a lifetime of passion and a year and a half in the industry and I still haven’t looked back.

Are you more focused on being an artiste or a producer?

Both. They’re both exhilarating. The high I get from being on stage is beyond words and the joy of creating a musical art piece out of nothing surpasses no other.

What inspires you?

Everything around me inspires me. My life, other peoples experiences and stories. Heartbreak, love, and making the world a happier place. I’m inspired by good music not any particular artiste but good natural music.

What’s been your biggest career moment?

I’ve had several. I can’t pick one as my biggest career moment but I can say that meeting J.Cole in Southampton and opening for Zakes Bantwini have to be somewhere at the top of my list.

Are you a fashion lover?

I am. I believe in art. And I try to ooze it through my appearance.

What’s your style?

Classic and African but I don’t mind experimenting here and there either.

What are your must-have pieces?

A clean pair of boxers, some bright subtle accessories (earrings, neck pieces and watch), last but not least is confidence. I never leave home without it.

Three people whose style you admire are?

I admire the people that are not afraid to be bold and different. The misfits and outcasts. Locally, the people I admire are probably the people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. To name a few, producers like Jaaz Odongo, guitarist Kato Change and producer/singer Delvin Mudigi. Internationally are the people I’d love to sit in the studio with or perform along-side: Quincy Jones, Pharell Williams and Calvin Harris.

What are the biggest fashion faux-pas you see both men and women committing?

The short-sleeved suits some politicians wear. I can’t stand them!

Your go to/trade mark look is?

My Kikoyi scarfs.

The fashion in Nairobi is…?

Growing bolder and more authentic each day. I love what we’re growing here in Kenya. It’s been a woman’s game for a while now but men are beginning to embrace daring and African clothing. The world needs to watch out for the next frontier in style and fashion.
