The adage ‘as devoted as a mother’ is not an irony, as mothers are our goddesses. If their presence is not near us there would be no continuity in life.

Thumbs up to mothers.

People might take it for granted when they see you wear shukas, and even carrying heavy baskets full of bananas, avocados, among other goods, on market day.

But I do give you 10 stars for that special role you play in the family.

Mothers are our stronghold when it comes to bringing us up and shaping our future; they are the springs that give life.

I am 24 years old and I have many reasons to celebrate my mother, not only as a heroine but also a legend.

I was born on November 4, 1994 and raised in small village deep in Kirinyaga County by a heroine named Muthoni.

HER SACRIFICE

My mother sacrificed to bring me up.

In 2004, my father started drinking and left my mum to care for me and my younger sibling who was a toddler then.

When I was in Standard Four, domestic violence was the order of the day.

I recall vividly one morning when my dad, a teacher, and I were preparing for school. As my mother was serving us breakfast, my father took a glass and hit her.

My mother fell to the ground and when my dad realised what he had done, he quickly took a wet clean towel and wiped my mother’s bleeding forehead.

In 2007, the violence became unbearable and my mum decided to leave.

What I like about my mother was that she never left us.

My mother was illiterate, but she really valued education as she knew it was the key to unlock great potentials in life.

She never remarried but concentrated on caring for us.

It is 11 years since my parents divorced. My mother deserves to be acknowledged because she struggled and sacrificed to make us who we are today. May God bless her abundantly.
