Hi Brenda,

Thanks for the good job you do. I recently overheard my two roommates gossiping about me. We share a room in a hostel. They went on and on about something I did - I invited them for an event but left them out last minute- and I thought it was unfair because they were calling me names. It was my event, not theirs, so I think I had the right to change my mind. I asked them to apologise and only one person did. The other one said she was justified and refused to say she was sorry. I felt so bad. What do I do?

Thanks for reading. If your roommates are angry at you for leaving them out of your event, perhaps the issue you should address first is why you left them out. Do you and your roommates have a cordial relationship?

Did you not feel like you had to invite them, that their presence was not necessary? If so, you are perfectly within your rights to not invite them, but you should also understand that of course they will feel slighted if they have not relegated themselves in your esteem as you have.

And you definitely should not have invited them, then disinvited them...The best you can do is apologise to them as well for not considering their feelings, and not make the same mistake again – after you have made the parameters of your relationship clear enough that another incident like this is improbable.
