Hi Brenda,

I’m 33 years old and I have been married for 10 years. My problem is that my wife is not faithful me and as a result, she has infected me with HIV. What can I do?

I'm so sorry about this breach of confidence. There are two ways you can go about this. Please decide from now on whether you want to leave her, or you want to stay with her.

If you want to leave, then get your legal affairs in order because it is going to be a long struggle, against her family and against yourself.

If you want to stay, you have to figure out what the boundaries for your relationship are going to be. Are you going to only use condoms? How will you get treatment together? Are there new drugs you will have to be taking, as a couple who are HIV positive?

Whatever route you choose, please go for counselling. You're going through a lot of confusing emotions during a time of betrayal and hurt, and I guarantee you that an outside eye looking in will help you figure it all out.

It can be traumatic to be violated in such a way, especially as you were keeping your end of the bargain. I wish you all the luck in the world.
