TECH BREAK: Limited iPhone memory? Here's what you can do

One of the downsides of owning an iPhone is that storage is limited. But you can back up your files on iCloud, Google Photos or on a computer, or delete unwanted apps and files to free up space. PHOTO | FILE | COURTESY

What you need to know:

  • iCloud is an online based storage platform offered by Apple, at a fee. iCloud will give you the first 5GB for free, and thereafter you’ll have to pay for extra storage monthly.
  • Google has one of the best cloud storage platforms in the business, and it is completely free to use with unlimited storage option for all your photos.
  • Another option is to back up files on your computer or delete apps and files that you do not need.

The iPhone is a great device. It is fast and the design is always on point, generation after generation. But one thing that has always stopped me from switching to an iPhone is the memory, or rather lack of it.

One of the downsides of owning an iPhone is that storage is limited. Once you have all those nice photos and apps installed you tend to get an “out of memory” message. And it's not like you can yank in an SD card to increase memory because iPhones don’t come with one of those slots. So what options are you left with as an iPhone user?

iCloud

The iCloud is an online based storage platform offered by Apple, at a fee. You can subscribe to this service and backup all your photos and videos online, giving your device some free space to ‘breathe’. iCloud will give you the first 5GB for free, and thereafter you’ll have to pay for extra storage monthly.

Google Photos

Google has one of the best cloud storage platforms in the business, and it is completely free to use with unlimited storage option for all your photos. Download Google Photos from the Apple store, log in with your google account, sync online backup and you are good to go. Once the photos and videos are online, you will be prompted to clear photos on local storage, leaving you with more space.

USB Backup

If the above two options don’t float your boat for some reason, you can opt for the good old traditional backup on your PC. Connect your iPhone to your PC and import your photos and videos to the local drive on your PC, then clear the backed up data to create more space. Alternatively, you can get yourself an iPhone compatible flash drive to back up your data on the go.

Other remedies on this issue is getting rid of apps you don’t use and deleting unwanted photos and videos. I you find all these options a tad bit unbearable, take your money to the nearest available Apple store and get an iPhone with a bigger memory.
