The delivery was a googly, but the batsman at the crease was not to be intimidated and smashed it for a decisive six. It was a winning shot by Nilofer’s Chak de India who became the inaugural champions of the unique family fun event held last Saturday afternoon at Sikh Union Club, Forest Road, Nairobi.

The premier Asian radio East FM106 eight-a-side knockout fun fiesta, where its presenter-driven teams have been providing entertainment at social and sporting events every Saturday afternoon since mid-August, celebrated a colourful champions crowning day.

Vikash’s Demolishers, the favourites, graciously accepted defeat in the finals. Nilofer’s Chak De India was overwhelmed to receive the winner’s trophy and the cash award of Sh100,000. The fiesta also gave an opportunity to spectators to participate in special hit and catch fixtures to win handsome prizes.

ISLAMIC CALENDAR

And last week, Muslim faithful observed Ashura, the 10th of Muharram — the first month of the Islamic calendar.

The day marks what Muslims believe is the creation of Adam and Eve by the Almighty, and also when Moses and his followers obtained victory over the Egyptian Pharaoh and his soldiers.

Above all else, Imam Hussain, Prophet Mohamed’s grandson, died on this day during the carnage that took place in Karbala Iraq.

The Islamic community considers this month to be the holiest. It is an occasion to remember the brave and selfless sacrifice of Hussain. It is time to observe fasts, attend special prayers in mosques and at homes.

Muharram is also time to make resolutions to improve oneself, and to set goals for becoming a better person spiritually and socially.

It is time to strengthen one's relationship with the creator through regular Dhikr and Duas and to participate in activities that advance social causes.

Let us pray that love, peace and unity in diversity prevail among us and the world over.

Aamin!
