  • Accounting equips you with skills that can be used across several professions.

Q. I studied accounting, and though I graduated two years ago, I haven’t found a job. Last month, I applied for a position in the purchasing department of a certain company and have been invited for the interview. Can I go for the interview and tell them that I really want to work for them but I am not keen on that particular job? Can I use the time to talk about why they should hire me as an accountant instead? Please enlighten me.

Today, employers are looking for employees who are versatile and multi-skilled. Accounting equips you with skills that can be used across several professions.

For instance, procurement requires accounting skills and therefore you will make good use of the knowledge you acquired in college for this position.

The world of work is constantly changing, and it is acceptable to study for a particular profession and end up pursuing a totally different career. It is therefore understandable that you applied for the purchasing role even though your interest is in accounting.

This was a very wise move since what is important is getting an opportunity to get into the organisation, once there, it is easier to negotiate your way to a different department. Ensure therefore, that you pass the interview that you have been called for.

Start by studying the job advert to understand the competencies required and ensure that you research on the products or services the company offers.

During the interview, your aim should be to demonstrate how your skills and competencies will be used to ensure that the company gets value for the money it spends in acquisition of goods or services.

You could indicate that your career aspiration is in the accounting profession, so in case there is a vacant accounting position, you might be considered for it.

However, be careful not to give the impression that you are not skilled enough to be offered the purchasing position.

Once offered the position, you could volunteer to offer your services to the accounting department as long as this is not in conflict with your official role, this way, you will be in a better position to make a decision on the professional path you would like to take in the long-term. Also, this will guide you to either pursue the professional certification for accounting, Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) for purchasing professionals.
