What you need to know:

  • Two of my favourite things are talking and music. My job combines both of these, which is why I love it so much.
  • I would be a teacher. Something about passing on what I know and have learnt. I’ve always imagined I’d be great at it. Or maybe because I grew up in a family of teachers. Besides my brother and me, everyone else in my family studied teaching.

Rae Kiragu is a radio presenter on Homeboys Radio.

Her show welcomes in the weekend every Saturday and Sunday morning from 6am to 9am.

1.What has surprised you most about being a mother?

That I could fantasise about a good night’s sleep and trips to the bathroom by myself. It’s been the best thing that ever happened to me, and has also been my biggest and most rewarding responsibility.

2.What do you love best about your job?

Two of my favourite things are talking and music. My job combines both of these, which is why I love it so much. That and the fact that a bad hair day at work isn’t that big a deal. Radio’s awesome!

3.What’s the strangest thing that has happened to you in studio?

I once hosted a dancehall show. It was on Uptown Radio 91.1FM before it shut down. I didn’t know much about reggae or dancehall, but I was determined, so determined in fact, that I played a Peter Tosh single and spoke right afterwards about him as if he was still alive...which he wasn’t, and reggae fans made sure I knew. I now Google things better.

4.If you could have any other job in the world, what would it be?

I would be a teacher. Something about passing on what I know and have learnt. I’ve always imagined I’d be great at it. Or maybe because I grew up in a family of teachers. Besides my brother and me, everyone else in my family studied teaching.

5. What would you say now to your 18-year-old self?

I would tell her not to worry. That she doesn’t need to have figured everything out, and that not knowing what you want to be when you grow up isn’t such a bad thing.

Things always fall into place with time.
