What you need to know:

  • Arrive at work and meetings on time; punctuality not only says that you are disciplined, but also shows that you respect other people’s time.
  • Do your research on tasks assigned to add value, and go an extra mile to get tasks accomplished to demonstrate commitment. Employers notice employees who take initiative.
  • Remain focused on your goal: to learn, network, stand out and leave a good impression.
  • If you get into conflict with someone, be proactive and aim to resolve it amicably or seek support through the internal channels provided.

Congratulations! Internships not only offer work experience, but also provide unique opportunities to make contacts and create good networks that open doors to future jobs. To do this is in a company you admire is a great start. You have no choice but to create a lasting impression and stand out, and here are some useful tips to focus you.

While it is great to ask for guidance, make suggestions too, give feedback and share ideas on possible solutions to tasks. Try and anticipate what your supervisor may need and come through with it.

Be careful not to belittle any task assigned, however mundane, instead, strive to be excellent in execution, a good sign that you are ready for more challenge.

When you have some free time, offer to assist others, after all, you came to learn. While it is great to be seen as part of the team, be careful not to be caught up in office gossip or openly take sides. A smart way to get yourself out of such situations is to focus on work.

That said, do not allow yourself to be bullied or put down. If subjected to this, or any other form of harassment, politely let the offender know their conduct is not welcome. Stand out by speaking up.
