Show her some respect

Just because she works in a bar doesn’t make a waitress deserving of your appalling behaviour. PHOTO | NATION

What you need to know:

  • I have come to realise that most of these people aren’t even that drunk to start with. They just hide behind alcohol to excuse their cowardly and uncivilised behaviour.

  • But all these characters aren’t as bad, aren’t as revolting, pathetic or vile as the chaps who disrespect waitresses.

  • They don’t get the day off when they are on their period, which sometimes means they have to work through cramps and back pain and nausea. And because jobs are hard to come by, because they want to keep the only job they have, they tolerate your crudeness

You see all types of characters in a bar. You will see guys who completely lose their heads after two beers. You will see guys who insist on walking their women to the loo, like bodyguards, because their women are so beautiful they stand a risk of abduction. Then there are those very loud chaps. Attention seekers. Slamming their drinks on the table.

Summoning waiters as if they are goats – basically being uncultured.

You will see chaps who will stare at you with deranged eyes if they catch you looking at their date.

Those guys with eyes that seem set too close together, breathing through their nostrils like upset buffaloes.

Those über jealous guys who will not hesitate to cause a melee because they are paranoid enough to think anybody who stares at their woman actually wants her. Even if you were just staring at her weave.

DISGUSTING CHAPS

Then there are those chaps who just want to fight everybody when high. Always causing a stink, picking rubbish tiffs and hurling insults, and usually just about ready to punch someone.

There are those who are always trying to impress women, ordering expensive alcohol and when the bill comes they complain loudly about how they are being robbed.

Then lately, there are those insecure fools with guns who let their women touch their guns because that, to them, is a form of validation, or foreplay.

The same guys who will pull a gun on you in the parking lot because you parked too close to his car.

But all these characters aren’t as bad, aren’t as revolting, pathetic or vile as the chaps who disrespect waitresses.

These uncivilised men who need just a little bit of alcohol in order to totally degrade a waitress.

Folk who think waitresses are below their status and have no say as long as they are buying, and are only there to be mishandled and to satisfy their urges.

This type of chap really truly disgusts me. Especially when they embark on this dastardly pastime of groping these girls, trying to touch their breasts and slapping their bums as they pass.

What year is this, for crying out loud – 1974? Nothing could be more disgusting than the actions of these guys.

I have come to realise that most of these people aren’t even that drunk to start with.

They just hide behind alcohol to excuse their cowardly and uncivilised behaviour.

They are aware of what they are doing, make no mistakes about that. Problem is that they are just too yellow to seduce a woman sober.

I highly doubt there are girls who grow up dreaming of waiting tables in bars. For most, it’s the only job that they can do at that point.

Maybe it’s the only job because they didn’t get a chance for an education like you did. That doesn’t make them lesser people.

Given a chance they would rather do something else with their lives. But they are there to serve you, not to be disrespected.

They don’t enjoy the nasty comments you throw their way. Or how you belittle them when you shout at them because your beer isn’t cold as you had ordered. Just because they aren’t complaining doesn’t mean they welcome it. They have feelings.

They are on their feet for hours.

SOMEONE'S DAUGHTER

They serve numerous tables and have to remember numerous orders, so sometimes they make mistakes.

Some work through weekends and through holidays. Nobody cuts them a cake in the office during their birthdays.

They don’t get the day off when they are on their period, which sometimes means they have to work through cramps and back pain and nausea.

And because jobs are hard to come by, because they want to keep the only job they have, they tolerate your crudeness because the other option would be to say no to your crass overtures and risk losing their job.

Of course, all this is none of your business. But it should be, my friend. It should be your business because these girls have feelings, but even more important, they are people.

They are someone’s girlfriend, wife, sister. They have husbands. They are mothers, for crying out loud!

They have children who they see off to school the next morning after that graveyard shift. And they struggle through this life so that they can earn a living. Just like you. Waitresses are not whores; they sell beer, not their ass.

And the very least you can do is show them some respect. It doesn’t cost you anything.
