PLAIN TRUTH: Stop looking for role models on social media

All those photos you are getting so worked up about are probably stage managed, that sex tape that had you fuming was probably fabricated. PHOTO| FILE| NATION MEDIA GROUP

What you need to know:

  • That celebrity you are hurling insults at is just doing what she needs to do to put clothes on her children’s back.
  • Who I have a bigger issue with is the parents who get upset that this or that celebrity is not being a good role model to their children.

There are two type of women in this world. There are women who care too much about what everybody else thinks of them.

These are women who wait on everyone else’s opinion before making their life decisions.

This woman will not even accept a job offer or a marriage proposal from the man of her dreams before hearing what Auntie Jemima has to say.

Then there is the other type of woman. The kind I like. The kind that just gets on with her life regardless of what the world thinks. Esther Akoth (Akothee), a local musician, belongs to this group of women. Esther is a ball of energy and if what she shares on social media is anything to go by, she is more comfortable when she is semi-dressed.

What is amusing is the number of adult men and women who spend time on her social media pages hurling insults at her.

Get dressed! What kind of a role model are you? What are you showing our children? she is told over and over. The more they type, the more she posts.

It’s amazing the amount of time and energy spent to give feedback on her dressing, her mannerisms and even her costumes on stage. I don’t get it. If she upsets you so much, why don’t you just quit checking her social media pages every minute? Why don’t you stop following her? It’s that simple, really.

Who I have a bigger issue with is the parents who get upset that this or that celebrity is not being a good role model to their children. First, what is a 12-year-old child doing on social media? Second, why are you pushing your parental responsibilities to strangers online? Why are you being lazy?

JUST SHOWBIZ

While it would be good if all celebrities stayed on the straight and narrow, the truth is there is no one but you who is obligated to model good behaviour to your child. No one.

That celebrity you are hurling insults at is just doing what she needs to do to put clothes on her children’s back. You are forgetting that this is show business.

All those photos you are getting so worked up about are probably stage managed, that sex tape that had you fuming was probably fabricated.

Those pictures you saw were probably leaked private moments.

What is certain is that these people care very little about what you think. If anything, the angrier you are, the more relevant they stay.

You can also be sure that your son or daughter was the last thing on their mind when they posted those photos.

So be a parent. Instead of wasting precious time, get off social media and model good behaviour to your child.

That is your responsibility. If there are still gaps, then look for role models who you deem suitable for your child. Not celebrities online. Actual, accessible men and women.
