The fare is well worth the expense

What you need to know:

  • At Sh3,900, I’ve always thought that Nyama Mama’s Sunday BBQ brunch is a tad on the higher side.
  • Walking in, right by the entrance, I was greeted by a chef grilling beef patties, steak and mutura, and next to him was a lady basting and grilling chicken and roast maize.
  • Spread around the restaurant were other sections including a salad bar, dessert section and in true Nyama Mama fashion, Kenyan foods like mukimo.
  • Coupled with the ambiance at the restaurant and music from the live band, I knew I was in for a great afternoon.
  • The beauty of this BBQ brunch is that Sh3,900 also entitles you to unlimited cocktails, beer and wine.

Oddly, Nyama Mama has never been top of mind whenever I’m considering places to pop into to grab some food.

Admittedly, I also tend to find places I like and then stick within my comfort zone, and I’ve already discovered far too many gems in Nairobi.

I am however also discerning enough that my favourite restaurant for lunch on Wednesday is hardly ever my go-to spot for dinner on Saturday.

BRUNCH

Rather than spend weekends lying on the sofa watching movie trailers all day in the guise of trying to find a film to watch, I find that brunches are a fun, low pressure, social way to while away time.

I have various favourites around town, but at Sh3,900, I’ve always thought that Nyama Mama’s Sunday BBQ brunch is a tad on the higher side, particularly given that I would probably be paying for a sibling or parent as well.

When a bunch of friends invited me to their Delta Towers location this past weekend to spend time with them, I jumped at the opportunity.

First of all, there are various key elements that make for the perfect brunch and these guys seem to have mastered several.

Walking in, right by the entrance, I was greeted by a chef grilling beef patties, steak and mutura, and next to him was a lady basting and grilling chicken and roast maize.

Spread around the restaurant were other sections including a salad bar, dessert section and in true Nyama Mama fashion, Kenyan foods like mukimo.

WORTH IT

After deciding that this would be my third cheat day of the week (because you can always start eating healthy tomorrow), I hit up the kuku choma station where the chef piled my plate with meat, then I also got a beef and bacon burger, because, beef and bacon.

The chicken was done just right although by the time I was done eating it, the burger was cold and unpalatable in the way that cold soggy burgers usually are.

I was too full to try anything else but when I saw patrons at the next table snacking on plantain chips which I am a sucker for, I decided to order a bowl as well, imagining that they were dry, crispy and perfectly salty.

They were not on the brunch menu hence cost an extra Sh300 but were sweet and soggy which was a let-down, because who does that to plantain?

After the chicken, I was too full to try anything else.

The beauty of this BBQ brunch however is that Sh3,900 also entitles you to unlimited cocktails, beer and wine (you can also just pay Sh2,200 for unlimited food only).

There was a spicy mojito station going and given that I lost count after the third cocktail, I can’t help but think that the cost seems high until you get there, then it’s all well worth it.
