Back to basics

What you need to know:

  • Always have your bust professionally measured by a bra expert to get the perfect size.
  • Like a little black dress, every woman should have at least 1 of the following styles.

As a fierce, fashionable femme fatale, one of the most important rules to great dressing is having the right kind of undergarments.

Often a fashion faux pa, poorly fitted undergarments should have no place in a woman’s closet.

October, being breast cancer awareness month takes us back to the basics. Different bras work for different things; they push up, minimize, create definition but the most important thing a good bra should do is give great support.

Always have your bust professionally measured by a bra expert to get the perfect size. Like a little black dress, every woman should have at least 1 of the following styles.

T-shirt bra: This is a great option to wear under tight fitting garments without nipple or seam-lines showing.

They are especially great to wear with a vest.

Strapless or Multiway bra: A great strapless bra is a definite must have. It is best in black and should give adequate support without sliding down as the day goes by.

A good strapless bra should be comfortable enough to be worn with loose garments as opposed to only fitted tops. The de-touchable straps can also be worn in different ways to allow for styles like halter necks or cross over tops.

Sports bra: They provide maximum support while reducing bounce during physical activities. They are a must have for any physical activity especially for fuller figures.

Some bra styles that are more based on need are;

Nursing bra: Intended for nursing mothers. The cups open and/or pull down to make breast-feeding easier while providing the utmost support.

They have wider sides, back and straps, easier fastening, soft cotton linings, drop-cup opening, and adjustable straps to create extra room.

They are best to be fitted 2 to 3 weeks before one’s baby is due. They are flexible, allowing extra room for when the milk comes in, as well as when your breasts reduce in size.

Minimizer bra: Designed for fuller figures to reduce the bust line. It reduces the bosom and creates a more rounded shape.

It is under wired. The wire is longer and wider, and goes round towards the back of the body. This bra can be very slimming and minimize the bust projection with about one to 2cm

Amoena bra: This is a special bra made for women who have undergone mastectomy and is made with a special pocket(s) that can carry a breast form/prosthesis.

Once you’ve acquired the basics, shop for more glamorous styles. Have a little fun underneath with bolder prints, silky fabrics, really deep scoop neck, lace detailed, etc. and work them into your style i.e a hint of a lacy bra peeking out from a starched white shirt!

Have a lovely week beautiful people.
