MUSIC REVIEW: Bank Alert by PSquare

P-Square in a past performance. I thought PSquare was supposed to have broken up, but I may have fallen behind with that story. Whatever the case, I am glad they have released a new song – "Bank Alert".I thought PSquare was supposed to have broken up, but I may have fallen behind with that story. What you need to know:

  • I really enjoy the Africanness of the video, which Nigerians tend to be better at than we in the East.
  • There is plenty of traditional dancing and costume, merging with the two PSquare men wearing very sharp suits and their Range Rover entourage.

I thought PSquare was supposed to have broken up, but I may have fallen behind with that story. Whatever the case, I am glad they have released a new song – "Bank Alert".

The video (and the song) centres around a broke guy who leaves his woman to go make his fortune, and now he is coming back – with a plane and everything, you know how our Naija kin do.

I really enjoy the Africanness of the video, which Nigerians tend to be better at than we in the East. There is plenty of traditional dancing and costume, merging with the two PSquare men wearing very sharp suits and their Range Rover entourage. And why is there always an angry father in the mix trying to stop the union until he sees the cash? Perhaps that is a representation of real life. The video also features various Nigerian personalities like Phyno and Mr Ibu.

At the beginning of the song he says something akin to ‘to prove your love for me you must chop my money…’ which is a spin on love that is proving more and more popular, though sounding disillusioned. One can argue that you can’t eat promises and dreams, and must be able to take care of a family before having one. Makes sense if it is not taken too far, I guess. I’m just glad he came back for her, even though it was five years later instead of one, like he promised. Girls who wait are not that many, with or without money. Isn’t there always someone with more?
