What you need to know:

  • I wanted to call it bomb shell but I thought that was too obvious so I chose Don Shell.
  • Mixology is an art and presentation is always very important.
  • I like going the extra mile than just pouring the liquid into a glass.

The show Lit360 premiered on NTV last week on Thursday, giving the audience an all-round coverage on not only the music industry but also a taste of the Nairobi lifestyle when it comes to food and drinks.

We spoke to Redempta Muluka, one of the top female mixologists in the country, and she explained the art of making a good cocktail.

One of her best cocktails, she says, is the Don Shell, the name she says she chose from the ingredients she had used, that included luxury premium tequila, Don Julio mixed with tangerine and coconut cream that was served using a coconut shell.

“I wanted to call it bomb shell but I thought that was too obvious so I chose Don Shell. Mixology is an art and presentation is always very important. I like going the extra mile than just pouring the liquid into a glass,” she said.

When preparing a cocktail, it is not just about mixing things, it is an art; one has to know the ratio of each ingredient.

Ms Muluka started her career as a professional mixologist back in 2006. She was hired as a bartender at the Diani Reef Hotel fresh from college where she had attained a Diploma in Hotel Management in Food and Beverages.

“Any mixologist will tell you that the process of making a cocktail is magical and that is exactly the feeling one should get after tasting your creation,” says Ms Muluka.

However, her big break came when she participated in an international mixology competition by East African Breweries Limited where she competed in the finals.

She created a signature cocktail which she called the “Hashtag.” It was a whisky cocktail which she says is not easy to create.
