We were privileged to attend the launch dinner for Storymoja Hay Festival, which took place on the evening of September 19 (yesterday) at the National Museums of Kenya.

The theme was 'kanga' and the night was dubbed a 'Kanga Karnival', with most of the guests making an effort to display their leso-influenced regalia.

Several personalities were in attendance, including the British High Commissioner, supermodel Christie Brinkley, actress Bai Ling and Njoki Ndungu.

The guest list was extensive and included the several writers who will be participating in this year's Hay Festival, like Teju Cole and Neal Hall, as well as other bigwigs: Paula Kahumbu (the director of the festival), Binyavanga Wainaina (winner of the Caine prize), Mumbi Kaigwa (actress), Muthoni Garland (Storymoja CEO) and Auma Obama.

The night was rounded off by a performance from June Gachui, Denise Gordon and Patricia Kihoro, backed by the Different Faces band, performing Motown hits, and the guests proceeded to dance the night away.

Storymoja Hay Festival will be taking place from the September 19 to September 21, and is an annual literary feast for Kenyans who are treated to international authors, seminars and sessions concerning all things wordy.
