The gates opened for the 4th edition of NextGen Fashion Weekend on Friday, September 14, 2018, at the Michael Joseph Centre in Westlands, Nairobi.
Young fashion creatives from different colleges and universities across the country thronged the event ready to showcase their designs, network with professionals in the fashion industry and hopefully win in one of the categories.
The challenge for 2018 was avant-garde, evening and ready-to-wear designs. It was quite evident from the spectacular pieces showcased by models on the runway that the creatives mastered the challenge and went all out in coming up with their designs.
The competitive event ran for two days and involved training, practical sessions, competitions among others for young and upcoming talent in collaboration with internationally recognized brands and professionals with a vast knowledge and experience within the fashion industry.
Speaking at the event, Mr Atman Ngau, Co-Director of Kenya Fashion Awards, commented on the competitors’ impressive fashion sense and emphasised on the need to tap into the fresh talent in the industry.
“There’s hope, this is the future of fashion; we would like all the participants to experience taking this as an inspiration and an opportunity to jumpstart their career. For many of the participants this show forms the basis of their career and beyond,” said Mr Ngau.
Established in 2013, the Kenya Fashion Awards through its subsidiary event, NextGen Fashion Weekend, provides a stepping stone for emerging talent into the highly competitive fashion arena through networking, promotion and guidance.
The event offers endless rewards for designers, photographers, models who participate as the event offers a great opportunity to increase brand awareness and to showcase designers, photographers or fashion stylists work to the industry professionals, fashionistas, press and media.
It hopes to enable youth to take advantage of the fast evolving creative economy that continues to play a big role in fostering economic growth, job creation, export earnings, social inclusion, cultural diversity and human development in Kenya.
The NextGen Fashion Weekend ended on Saturday, September 14, 2018. A panel of judges drawn from key stakeholders in the fashion industry as well as fashion icons selected winners following the two-day showcasing and they will be announced in a subsequent Award Gala held later in the year.
