TAKE UP CHALLENGE

In a video posted on youtube, Larry, Shelmith Mukami, Ngare Kariuki and Jackson Ndirangu each have a bucket full of water.

Larry goes on to announce his donation and nominates those he wants to take up the challenge.

On the background the team looks relaxed and even exchanges some high fives all relaxed and ready for the challenge.

When they pour the water on their heads they each seem to shiver as the cold water soaks into their clothes.

For a moment the buckets can be seen suspended on the heads after the water has soaked into them as they sign in unison.

The Ice Bucket Challenge started early this year as a campaign to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease – and encourage donations to research towards finding a cure.

The challenge has received a lot of global criticism with many people complaining that many who are nominated do not actually donate to charities and only take the challenge for fun.

It has a standard international way of being done where the participants film themselves accepting the challenge, pouring cold water on their heads and nominate others to do the same within 24 hours.

DONATIONS

The nominated person is then expected to donate between USD 10 if they pour water on themselves and USD 100 if they don’t, but the amount is not limited to this.

Over USD 88.5 million has been raised so far towards ALS research in the challenge which was first taken by former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates.

A myriad of notable global personalities has taken on the challenge including TV personalities, actors, musicians, political figures and sports personalities.

Some of the sports personalities who have taken on the challenge include Usain Bolt, David Beckham, Lionel Messi and Tiger Woods among others.

Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook of Apple Inc have also taken on the challenge and donated significant amount to ALS research.
