Dutchman’s body found dumped in septic tank

What you need to know:

  • Mr Goes’ gardener was arrested a few weeks after his disappearance.

The body of a 77-year-old Dutchman, who also holds a Kenyan passport, was found by detectives yesterday, six months after he went missing.

The detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) recovered the body of Mr Jacobus Van Der Goes from a septic tank at his compound in Mombasa’s Nyali estate.

The police, led by Mombasa DCI boss Pius Macharia, found the decomposing body of the man who went missing in January.

Mr Macharia said the body was wrapped in a mattress. A hammer and crowbar, suspected to have been used to clobber him to death, were found in the septic tank.

GARDENER ARRESTED

Mr Goes’ gardener was arrested a few weeks after his disappearance. Police, who were trailing him, found the gardener had been using the deceased’s ATM cards and had withdrawn money from Mombasa and Kericho.

He is serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence for stealing. Two other people were arrested this week after the gardener named his accomplices. The two, said Mr Macharia, were found with the Dutchman’s vehicle in Mombasa town.

Speaking to journalists, Mr Macharia said the two led the police to the man’s house and showed them where they had dumped the body. Mr Macharia said charges would be preferred against all three.

Police started investigating after the man’s family in Holland reported him missing on January 25.
